Singing Your Song

SINGING YOUR SONG

When a woman in a certain African tribe knows she is pregnant, she goes out
into the wilderness with a few friends and together they pray and meditate
until they hear the song of the child. They recognize that every soul has
its own vibration that expresses its unique flavor and purpose. When the
women attune to the song, they sing it out loud. Then they return to the
tribe and teach it to everyone else.

When the child is born, the community gathers and sings the child’s song to
him or her. Later, when the child enters education, the village gathers and
chants the child’s song. When the child passes through the initiation to
adulthood, the people again come together and sing. At the time of marriage,
the person hears his or her song.

Finally, when the soul is about to pass from this world, the family and
friends gather at the person’s bed, just as they did at their birth, and
they sing the person to the next life.

In the African tribe there is one other occasion upon which the villagers
sing to the child. If at any time during his or her life, the person commits
a crime or aberrant social act, the individual is called to the center of
the village and the people in the community form a circle around them. Then
they sing their song to them.

The tribe recognizes that the correction for antisocial behavior is not
punishment; it is love and the remembrance of identity. When you recognize
your own song, you have no desire or need to do anything that would hurt
another.

A friend is someone who knows your song and sings it to you when you have
forgotten it. Those who love you are not fooled by mistakes you have made or
dark images you hold about yourself. They remember your beauty when you feel
ugly; your wholeness when you are broken; your innocence when you feel
guilty; and your purpose when you are confused. You may not have grown up in
an African tribe that sings your song to you at crucial life transitions,
but life is always reminding you when you are in tune with yourself and when
you are not. When you feel good, what you are doing matches your song, and
when you feel awful, it doesn’t.

In the end, we shall all recognize our song and sing it well. You may feel a
little warbly at the moment, but so have all the great singers.
Just keep singing and you’ll find your way home.

Manatee and Clean Waters Ceremony

Manatee and Clean Waters Ceremony

Hand out outline of ceremony, information about the manatee crisis and the effects of cruise ships on the  Florida waters.

Manatees have been removed from the  endangered species list during the last administration, and in the last year 20% of this gentle animal’s population has been lost due to starvation as a result of pollution and habitat loss. Only 7500 manatees remain in Florida. For an update on the situation, see https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/oct/24/manatees-florida-endangered-species-review  and https://foe.org/blog/cruise-ship-effects-marine-life/

The following link explains more about the symbolism of the gentle manatee.

https://whatismyspiritanimal.com/spirit-totem-power-animal-meanings/mammals/manatee-symbolism-meaning/#Manatee-Symbolism

A conche outline is on the deck of the ship as we sail from port, laid over a blanket. We have created a sacred spiritual space. The elements of grass, water, sand, and salt will be available in bowl on an altar nearby, along with more information about the crisis.  People are invited to take one each of the one they resonate with. The elements will each be in a bowl.

State our intention – restoring of a thriving manatee population and a pristine marine environment

Call in the four directions. (see instructions)

Gaya renews herself as we become trustworthy stewards of the planet.

Take in three cleansing breaths inhaling compassion, love and trust, and exhale uncleanliness, overuse of the planet and environment and selfish unconsciousness.

We commit ourselves to the symbols of the manatee:

  • Breathing
  • Compassion
  • Curiosity
  • Generosity
  • Peace
  • Shapeshifting
  • Spiritual Love
  • Tranquility
  • Trust
  • Water

I am aware, I am connected and I am gentle.

Explain the four symbols

Sand – cleansing through passage of time

Grass symbolizes renewal, the healing of the gentle manatee

Salt is purification and the long-lasting friendship with all god’s creatures

Water symbolizes life. We one with life, and with all beings of our beautiful planet.

Release of the elements

Repeat affirmation I am aware; I am connected and I am gentle

End with Gratitude prayer

Vow Renewal

We gather here today to celebrate your marriage of _____ years. We rejoice in your continuing love for each other as you renew your vows
We thank God for the passion and joy which you have known and the strength with which you have been blessed. Today you declare publicly before God, family and friends your special love and reaffirm your lasting commitment as partners in love and life.
You will declare that in spite of the difficulties and hardships of life, that with God’s help you will continue to love and be faithful to one another. You again commit yourselves to a love for one another that involves the total giving of yourselves. You covenant to accept each other totally, creating a safe and loving space for each other to grow as individuals and partners and to mature in faith.
You make this covenant today before God, the creator of the life that you share, and the giver of that special love that you have for each other.
May that special love you now share continue to grow and blossom in years to come and be sustained by God, family and friends and the commitment you make again this day.

The Vows

(Name) and (Name), you are about to make promises of love to one another. These promises declare your continuing love to be a special commitment which will strengthen your lives for whatever situation you may face with the strength and courage of two.

I, N , take you, N , my wife,
to have and to hold
from this day forward;
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
till death us do part;
according to God’s holy law.
and this is my solemn vow.

The Giving of Rings

A circle is an ancient symbol of wholeness and peace. It represents the boundaries beyond which the special nature of a particular relationship does not extend. The ring is the accepted token of a marriage covenant. As these rings are fashioned from one of the earth’s most precious material, so may your love, nourished and sustained by the love of God, be the most precious and durable of the values you share. In giving and receiving these rings, you again acknowledge that your lives remain joined in one unbroken circle, wherever you go, you will always return to your shared life together.

The Blessing of the Rings

Heavenly Father, by your blessing
let these rings be to N and N
a symbol of unending love and faithfulness,
to remind them of the vow and covenant
which they have made this day
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The man places the ring on the hand of his wife and holding it there says

N, I give you this ring
as a sign of our marriage.
With my body I honour you,
all that I am I give to you,
and all that I have I share with you,
within the love of God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

If rings are to be exchanged the woman places a ring on the hand of her husband and, holding it there, says

N, I give you this ring
as a sign of our marriage.
With my body I honour you,
all that I am I give to you,
and all that I have I share with you,
within the love of God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessing upon the Marriage

Before God and this congregation (Name) and (Name) have renewed their marriage vows to each other. They have re-confirmed their covenant of marriage by the joining of hands and the exchange of rings. May there be truth and understanding between you as you are a joy and a blessing to each other. May you enjoy length of days, fulfillment of hopes, and peace and contentment of mind.

God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit,
bless, preserve and keep you;
the Lord mercifully grant you the riches of his grace,
that you may please him both in body and soul,
and, living together in faith and love,
may receive the blessings of eternal life.
May God bless and keep you always. Amen

Additional Material for the Service

Prayer

Spirit of God, in whom we live and move and have our being, you have given us the life and grace of human love that draws us to each other. Today we pray for (Name) and (Name) in their continued life together. We are thankful for the joy they find in each other and the hope they declare in this act of re-marriage. May they always be strengthened to keep the vows they have made and cherish the life they share, and to honour each other in love. Amen.

Bible readings suitable for the service

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient; love is kind and envies no one.  Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude; never selfish, not quick to take offence.  Love keeps no score of wrongs; does not gloat over other men’s sins, but delights in the truth.  There is nothing love can not face; there is no limit to its faith, its hope, and its endurance.

Genesis 2:18-24
The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, ‘ for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

John 15:9-12
As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue in my love.  If you keep my commandments, and abide in his love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.  These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.  This is my commandment:  That you love one another as I have loved you.

Psalm 128:1-4
Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. Thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. May the LORD bless you from Zion all the days of your life; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem, and may you live to see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel.

Mark 10:6-9
From the beginning of creation God made them male and female.  For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.  What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Ephesians
Submit yourselves one to another as the fear of God. Wives, show reverence for your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church and He is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own

Husbands in everything.  Husbands, love your wife, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by
the word; that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkles or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own body; He that loves his wife loves himself.

For no man ever yet hateth his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord the church. For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is a profound one and I am saying this as it refers to Christ and the Church; however, let husband love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respect her husband.”

Additional Readings

When you fall in love it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then it subsides and when it subsides you have to make a decision, you have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part, because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the desire to mate every second of the day, it is not lying awake at night imagining he is kissing every part of your body. No, don’t blush, I am telling you some truths. This is just ‘being in love,’ which any of us can convince ourselves we are in. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away. It doesn’t sound very exciting does it? But it is.  Dr. Lannis, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

“The world, for me, and all the world can hold
Is circled by your arms: for me there lies,
Within the lights and shadows of your eyes,
The only beauty that is never old.”
James Weldon Johnson

When the one man loves the one woman and the one woman loves the one man, the very angels desert heaven and sit in that hour and sing for joy. Braham-Sutra

Blessed art though, O Lord, who makes
the bridegroom rejoice with the bride.
Talmud (Ketubot 8)

What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined for life, to strengthen each other in all labour, to rest on each other in sorrow, to minister to each other in all pain, to be with each other in silent unspeakable memories at the moment of the last parting? George Eliot

Rosh Hashana

ROSH HASHANA: The Feast of Trumpets (Jewish New Year)ROSH HASHANA (Jewish New
Year)
by David Brown, 21 Elul 5756
Introduction
Rosh Hashana, or Jewish New Year, is at once solemn and joyful. It is solemn because of the Awe of judgment. It is joyful because it represents the hope of the future redemption of Israel.
Rosh Hashana marks the beginning of the High Holy Days. It falls on the first day of the seventh month, according to the Hebrew calendar (see Leviticus 23:23). It could occur anywhere from the first to the last week of September on the Western calendar. It ushers in the ten days of repentance leading up to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The name “Rosh Hashana” literally means “Beginning of the Year” You may wonder how this can be, since it is called the first day of the seventh month! The reason is that the Jewish calendar is built on two cycles-the religious calendar
beginning in the Spring, and the civil calendar beginning in the Fall. In the Torah, the months are never named but only numbered, beginning with the month of Nisan in the early Spring, which is the first month according to the religious calendar.

Rosh Hashana Customs
Among the many traditions of Rosh Hashana are:
dipping of bread into honey after kiddush as a symbol of the
hope that the new year will be sweet.
dipping pieces of apple into honey, for the same reason. Also, the apple is said to symbolize the Divine Presence.
use of round loaf of bread instead of the usual braided hallah. Some say the round shape symbolizes a crown.
avoidance of nuts (I don’t mean people who think they saw Elvis on the subway, but actual “nuts.” This is because the numerical value of the Hebrew word for “nut” is the same as the word for “sin.”)
Tashlikh ceremony, in which “sins” are ceremoniously tossed into a river and washed away, as penitential prayers are said.
The Shofar
The most obvious distinguishing feature of Rosh Hashana is the blowing of the shofar, or ram’s horn.
The shofar is associated with the coronation of a King.
The shofar heralds the beginning of the penitential period
The Torah was given amid blasts of a shofar
The prophets compare their message to blasts of shofar
It is a reminder of the Conquering armies that destroyed the temple
It is a reminder of the Substitutionary Sacrifice of the ram for Isaac
It fills one with Awe-Amos 3:6
It is associated with Judgment Day-Zephaniah. 1:14, 16
It heralds the Messianic Age, Isaiah 27:13
It heralds the Resurrection
Significance
Unlike Passover, the Bible does not clearly identify Rosh Hashana with a
historical event, so we must look to tradition to discover its significance.
According to Talmudic tradition, the Ten Days of Awe which begin at Rosh Hashana
are the time in which God determines the fate of each human being. On Rosh
Hashana, the wholly righteous are supposedly inscribed in the Sefer ha-Hayyim,
or Book of Life, while the wholly wicked are inscribed in the Book of Death. The
fate of all others hangs in the balance until Yom Kippur. Consequently, it is a
time for introspection, for taking stock of one’s behavior over the past year and making amends for any wrongdoing.

Connie C. Eulogy

————————————————————————–

#98.411200 From Toni Lamotta, Thu Apr 16 at 8:34p:

I invite you all to join me now in a symbolic toast, L’Chaim, Connie – to

LIFE.

Through all she suffered, through all she endured, she probably had the

chance to prepare her funeral more than anyone I know.  But, through it all,

Connie wasn’t dying.  She had a lust for life.  She was an inspiration –

showing us LIFE – her message was to enjoy LIFE fully.

Born Oct. 23, 1943 to Josie & Joe LaMotta, her dad was in the service for

her first two years and she knew him only through the mailman.  When she

began to speak, one of her sentences was “any mail from my dad?”

On weekends, either Uncles Charley took 3 buses to take her to Brooklyn or

Jenny took the train to bring her to Staten Island – and in both places, she

was the only girl child, much adored.

While mom was at work, she was raised by our grandmother, Connie #1 – and we

all knew she was #1.  One of our many family stories of our broken

conversations – since grandma spoke only Italian, and Connie, very little –

was when she sent Connie to the store for pazalene.  For those who don’t

know Italian, she was asking for “parsley”.  Connie, feeling certain she

understood, proudly came home with a jar of Vaseline!

Her cousins and sister remember holidays where she directed our make shift

plays in our family basement – telling us in no uncertain terms when to sing

and dance on cue!

Connie clearly had a mind of her own – and she wasn’t afraid to share it

with Pope or pauper.  At the age of one, she put her foot in her birthday

cake, and the people in Joe’s deaconate class say she had her foot in her

mouth frequently since!.  Still, they made her an honorary member of the

class of ’83 for attending more classes than most of them. Connie can truly

be called the first woman deacon!

Connie was REAL – when she disagreed, you knew it.  She saw things as black

and white, and had no room for gray.  But, when she agreed, you knew that

too.  She loved deeply and was passionate about everything she did.  She

never did anything half- heartedly.  So, if she said something, you knew she

meant it!

Joe proposed to Connie after 5 years of dating & he tells me that he slipped

the ring on her finger in a dark alley by her house. (I wonder what else

they did there?)  Joe put the ring on the wrong hand – and from then on,

Connie began to give him directions.

She met Joe when he was 19 and she was only 16, at a bazaar at St. Francis

Xavier’s.  Little did they know then that so much of their lives would

revolve around the Church.

Twenty-four years ago, they went to Bishop Sheridan, who was then pastor of

Holy Rosary and said, “Let us know if there is anything we can ever do to

help!”  They were never without work since – and never without the blessings

of support that came with it.  They were involved in the Church’s Baptismal

program, Family ministry and RENEW.  They both attended a Cursillo and were

active in the Charismatic Renewal.

Many of you were probably right here twenty-one years ago on that Thursday

night in the pouring rain when Connie was being operated on for an aneurysm

on her brain.  She was given a 1% chance to survive.  Connie & Joe had

gotten involved with Marriage Encounter just three months before – and it

was to have a profound effect on their lives up to this day.  The witness of

the faith and support from the Marriage Encounter community will remain in

all our memory.

The next 10 years were a struggle for recovery.  She met each step with

Strength… Many people I spoke to this week and asked what they would say

about Connie, mentioned her Strength.  One person suggested that strength

wasn’t strong enough – the word that described her was FORTITUDE – and

always – there was FAITH.

Through this time, she showed a great deal of unselfishness and became a

volunteer – bringing communion to nursing homes – and teaching others to

read, when she was just re-learning herself.

Many people I spoke to said their fondest memories about Connie centered

around the time of her adopting Michelle.  I personally remember the day

with much joy.  Michelle came to join our family in the weeks before

Christmas.  The experience with her was so good that Connie and Joe decided

to do it again, and two years later came home with Joey, who many remember

as the longest bundle they had ever seen.  He too came to join us at

Christmas time.

She seemed to choose Christmas time as her time of greatest joys and deepest

pains.  Christmas is – after all – the day we most celebrate LIFE.

Connie never let her illness stop her from fully living.  She loved to

travel and did so extensively.  One of her favorite stories took place on

their trip to Hawaii, where after the other 6-8 people with her got out, she

was left in the elevator of a 20 story building.  Each of them went up and

down the floors, calling, where are you, Connie?  When they were all finally

united, Connie began her contagious giggle.  So many of us shared so many

laughs with her.  Even the therapist who worked with her during the most

difficult years of her recovery, sent a letter to Joe staying that through

all her difficulty, she always found reason to laugh.

She traveled to both coasts, from Maine to Florida, St. Thomas, Aruba,

Jamaica, the Panama Canal and most recently to Lourdes – ever believing,

ever hoping.  On this recent trip, her only worry was that the airlines

would stop her and accuse her of smuggling drugs!

But, of all the places she traveled, her favorite place to be  – the place

where she went to be refreshed and re energized for the past 5 years – was

Cape Cod.  She seemed to leave her illness back in the Bronx whenever she

went there.  So many of us share stories of whale watching, bike riding and

falling off (OOPS – don’t tell Joe!)  and getting lost while carrying a huge

pot of mums and walking over 7 miles.

The dearest travel story that Joe told me, was on a trip to Lake Minnewaka,

when they were hiking on the trails.  She looked at Joe and said, “look –

look how pretty. ”  “What?”, he asked, for he didn’t see anything.  “There”.

She was pointing to MOSS!!  This is so symbolic of what she taught us.  She

saw beauty where we all might see only plainness.

When someone recently said to her, “I wish the Dr. could have helped you to

live longer.”  She responded, “Oh, but she gave me 10 good years.”  She saw

so much positive – where many of us would see the negative.

So many people fight disease.  Connie taught us all how to LIVE with

suffering.  Connie faced cancer with Courage – Fortitude – Perseverance –

and most of all – FAITH.    I know that if she could speak to us all here

today – she would want to give to each of us, her tremendous gift of FAITH.

She’d want us to believe as much as she believed.  She’d want us to remember

when faced with our own life’s seeming struggles is that Living Life fully

is about believing.

Connie never lost hope and was rewarded for her faith by a peaceful death,

surrounded by her loved ones.

During her last weeks at Calvary, the comments most often heard were how

unselfish she was.  She didn’t complain of her pain or talk of her own

suffering.  Instead, she’d ask someone how their children were, or “would

you like to watch the news”, or “how was so and so feeling”.

Her selfless love was especially seen a few weeks ago when Nicky and Blanca

got engaged.  “Where’s the champagne,” she said and holding her glass to

them she whispered one of her last few words, “To your happiness.”  — and

to you, Connie, who has given us so much happiness, we toast, :  To your

FAITH, to your LIFE, L’Chaim!

Opening Song: God’s Masterpiece –

Sung by Marti Capodiferro

Who presents this child for Blessing?

(Holly & Matti hisgodparents) : We do.

Dr. Toni:   To all of you here present – know that This christening is a recognition of the infinite power of the Spirit in each of us and especially in this child who we are welcoming and blessing this day.

You, the family and friends, are involved in this service because you form a circle of love around Christopher today symbolizing the Divine Love in which all Life is immersed.

It is my belief that children come into this world whole and complete and that the seed of perfection awaits only its recognition for its outpouring of Truth, and the complete expression of good in each of us.

It is the work of all here present to remember this truth even and especially at times when Christopher may forget. Our role is to always love him unconditionally and remind him of his innate Goodness.

There is a story that I would like to share with you all today that illustrates what I mean.

When a woman in a certain African tribe knows she is pregnant, she goes out into the wilderness with a few friends and together they pray and meditate until they hear the song of the child. They recognize that every soul has its own vibration that expresses its unique flavor and purpose. When the women attune to the song, they sing it out loud. Then they return to the tribe and teach it to everyone else.

When the child is born, the community gathers and sings the child’s song to him or her. Later, when the child enters school, the village gathers and chants the child’s song. When the child passes through the initiation to adulthood, the people again come together and sing. At the time of marriage, the person hears his or her song.

Finally, when the soul is about to pass from this world, the family and friends gather at the person’s bed, just as they did at their birth, and they sing the person to the next life.

In the African tribe there is one other occasion upon which the villagers sing to the child. If at any time during his or her life, the person commits a crime or aberrant social act, the individual is called to the center of the village and the people in the community form a circle around them. Then they sing their song to them.

The tribe recognizes that the correction for antisocial behavior is not punishment; it is love and the remembrance of identity. When you recognize your own song, you have no desire or need to do anything that would hurt another. But, if you forget, you can depend on true friends. They are those who know your song and sing it to you when you have forgotten it.

Will you be those friends?
If so, say WE WILL

This consecration service welcomes this child,  Christopher Valentine Murray into our midst and it is a promise of each of us here to always remind him of the truth of who he is.

We recognize that this child came forth from the Divine and that perfection exists within him.

Our blessing service symbolizes our conscious immersion in the Life Stream of Good.  It recognizes Our Oneness with all that is and the fact that we can never be separated from our Good.  We recognize that Christopher is on a new adventure of Life and lives, moves and has his being in the energy of Good.  He shall always be in that all embracing circle of Divine Love.

First we ask his Godparents Holly and Matti — will you promise to love Christopher, to be understanding and patient with him, to share with him and help teach him as he grows up?

Holly & Matti, You are all being given an important task.  You are being asked to pledge to help teach this child that he is a precious child of the Divine — to help teach him this not only by your words, but by your actions as well.  And, you are being charged with the responsibility of seeing to the spiritual welfare of this child should the need arise for you to stand in as friend and counselor.

Will you do this to the best of your ability?

Holly & Matti-    We will.

Joe & Marcy, parenting is one of the most demanding and challenging life experiences you may ever have.  Yet, it is by far your greatest opportunity to grow in givingness, patience, honesty and unconditional love.  Be willing to give Christopher your best.  Realize that you may make mistakes from time to time — we all do — but learn from them and move on.  Always love yourself.  This is the greatest gift you can give to your son.

Joe & Marcy — Will you teach Christopher the Truth of his Being, that from childhood he may realize his unity with all life?

Joe & Marcy –  We will.

Will you do this not only by word, but by example so that Christopher Valentine may learn to live joyously, creatively and harmoniously?   Will you do this to the best of your ability?

We will.

I’d like to share with you a poem from Kahlil Gibran:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you.

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give

them your love but not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies, but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to  make them like you,

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows might go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so he loves also the bow that is stable.

Red roses are the universal symbol of Love.  As this rose touches Christopher’s head, it is a symbol of the Wisdom that we accept flowing through him.

And as this rose now touches Christopher’s heart, it is a symbol of the Divine Love always guiding him from within.

I bless you  Christopher Valentine Murray  in the name of the Divine Life within you, and of the moving, Creative Principle of all life.

Invite each guest to come forward and drop a rose petal onto Christopher while saying a word or phrase that they wish for him.

Rev. Toni: I dedicate this child today and know that perfect intelligence guides and directs him and unfailing Love draws him into the ways of eternal happiness.  I dedicate this child to the Universe’s perfect care and keeping.  The Strength of the Divine Masculine upholds him.  The Beauty of the Divine feminine presence fills him.  May he be guided by a perfect balance of  intelligence and unfailing love May his life be blessed and happy..

Readings and Affirmations

Love – Red

Reading:

Science of Mind Textbook – Page 608

“Love is the self-givingness of Spirit through the desire of Life to express Itself in terms of creation. Emerson tells us that Love is a synonym for God. We are also told in the New Testament that ‘He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love.’ Love is free from condemnation, even as it is free from fear. Love is a cosmic force whose sweep is irresistible. “

Affirmation:

I am swept into the activity of Love in all that I do. My every action takes Love into consideration and allows me to claim the Love that God shares through me, for me and as me.

Peace – Blue

Reading:

Science of Mind Textbook – Page 617

“A state of inner calm. An inner calm so complete that nothing can disturb it. The peace that comes only from the knowledge that It is All. Fathomless Peace is meant by the Peace of the Spirit. This is the Peace to which Jesus referred when he said, ‘Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you.’ The infinite is always at Peace because there is nothing to disturb It. A realization of our Oneness with Omnipresence brings peace, the peace which is accompanied by a consciousness of Power.

Affirmation:

As I remember my connection to the Universe, I embody the Peace that allows me to know that I cannot be disturbed. This knowing allows me to be a presence in the world that brings calmness and harmony to all that I do.

Life – Green

Reading:

Science of Mind Textbook – Page 606

“The animating Principle of Being… That inner something that makes everything live… Life is That Which Lives, and power is the energy with which It operates… In the objective world, Life is the power that binds everything together. It appears that Life manifests on different levels… All are but different ways through which the One Power operates. Life, then, is that quality of Being, running through all, which enables anything to be what it is.

Affirmation:

There is one Life, that Life is God, that Life is perfect, that Life is my life now.

Joy – Yellow

Reading:

Science of Mind Textbook – Page 603

“The emotion excited by the expectancy of good. Gladness, delight, exultation. “

Joy is the absolute experience of our good in its fullest form moving through us. When we connect to the excitement of knowing that no matter what we do, that the Universe is doing it as us and through us then we become connected to the knowing that it is also working for us. Often confused with pleasure and happiness, Joy resides within and is expressed outwardly. No external condition can rob us of our joy nor can it impart to us more Joy. It is only by the activity of enthusiastically embracing our experience as one that emanates from within that Joy can be infused into our thoughts and actions. In this way, it is not fleeting, but an ever present Principle that has the ability to express at any point in which we have made ourselves available to celebrate our own goodness as the very goodness that God is.

Affirmation:

I am filled with the gladness and delight of knowing that no matter where I am or what I am doing, I am always receiving good. I live in the excitement and anticipation of that good in every moment.

Truth – Purple

Reading:

Science of Mind Textbook – Page 639

“That which is. It is the Reason, Cause and Power in and through everything. It is the Birthless, Deathless, Changeless, Complete, Perfect, Whole, Self-Existent, Causeless, All-Mighty, God, Spirit, Law, Mind, Intelligence, and Anything and Everything that implies reality. By a process of axiomatic reasoning, we arrive at the conclusion that Spirit knows nothing outside Itself. The Truth is That Which Is; and being That Which Is, It must be Infinite and All. Being Infinite or All, the Truth can have nothing outside itself, other than itself, or unlike itself, by which to divide itself; consequently, the Spirit is indivisible, changeless and complete within itself. Itself is All that Is – both Cause and Effect, the Alpha and the Omega.”

Affirmation:

The Truth of who I am realizes its wholeness by consciously knowing that I am an indivisible expression of God. I am complete as God is complete, perfect as I am a part of God, which is perfect in its wholeness.

Beauty – Pink

Reading:

Beauty is the act of God discovering and acknowledging itself. When we pause to admire a sunset, the blooming of a flower, a smile, a work of art or even an entire culture, we recognize the divine presence within these things that stirs up the feelings of appreciation and gratitude in us. Acknowledging the Beauty of the world around us in the manifest world is akin to acknowledging the grand and vast presence of God from whence all things come. It is the connection we find in ourselves and in the world around us that bespeaks of a universal goodness that makes all things possible; and in all of its wisdom it has created us and all that we see and imparted to us an opportunity to pay witness to its magnificence.

Affirmation:

I recognize the Beauty in all things knowing that doing so is to recognize that it is of God, as I am of God, and that we are one by means of it. I see the Beauty in everyone and everything and it reminds me of my own goodness.

Light – White

Reading:

Science of Mind Textbook – Page 607

“In flashes of illumination, the inspired have seen INTO THE VERY CENTER OF REALITY, and have brought back with them a distinct impression of what they have seen and felt. A glimpse of this reality, illumines the whole being with a flood of light. Every mystic has had this experience. Jesus was the greatest of all mystics; and once, at least, after a period of illumination, his face was so bright that his followers could not look upon it. In moments of deepest realization, the great mystics have sensed that One Life flows through ALL; and that ALL are some part of that life. They have also seen substance, a fine, white, brilliant stuff, forever falling into everything; a Substance indestructible and eternal. At time, the realization has been so complete that they have been actually blinded by the light. Light was the first great revelation of the Divine Creative Energy that called all living things into being… “Let there be light and there was light”. There is a healing light in the rays of the sun, which we term a physical light; there is a healing power in the wonderful high powered lamps, but how much greater is the healing power which Jesus recognized in himself and in others! “I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” “…I have set the to be a light…” “He that loveth his brother abideth in the light.” “…the son’s of God, without rebuke… ye shine as lights in the world.”

Affirmation:

As I awaken to the realization that God is having it’s being by means of me, I embrace the light that illumines my path knowing that it shines from me, upon me and for my highest good. I celebrate the return of the light as my return to this knowing and am shown all that is mine to see.

“Let There Be Peace On Earth”

Lyrics and a Brief History

Sy Miller and Jill Jackson were a husband and wife songwriting team. In 1955 they wrote a song about their dream of peace for the world and how they believed each one of us could help create it.

They first introduced the song to a group of teenagers selected from their high schools to attend a weeklong retreat in California. The young people were purposefully from different religious, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds, brought together to experiment with creating understanding and friendship through education, discussion groups, and living and working together in a camp situation. Sy Miller wrote in his own words what happened:

“One summer evening in 1955, a group of 180 teenagers of all races and religions, meeting at a workshop high in the California mountains locked arms, formed a circle and sang a song of peace. They felt that singing the song, with its simple basic sentiment – ‘Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me,’ helped to create a climate for world peace and understanding.”

When they came down from the mountain, these inspired young people brought the song with them and started sharing it. And, as though on wings, “Let There Be Peace On Earth” began an amazing journey around the globe. It traveled first, of course with the young campers back to their homes and schools, churches and clubs. Then the circle started by the teenagers began to grow. Soon the song was being shared in all fifty states – at school graduations and a PTA meetings, at Christmas and Easter gatherings and as part of the celebration of Brotherhood Week. It was a theme for Veteran’s Day, Human Rights Day and U.N. Day. 4-H Clubs and the United Auto Workers began singing it. So did the American Legion, the B’nai B’rith, the Kiwanis Clubs and CORE. It was taped, recorded, copied, printed in song books, and passed by word of mouth. The song spread overseas to Holland, England, France, Germany, Lebanon, South America, Asia and Australia. The Maoris in New Zealand sang it – even the Zulus in Africa sang it.

Professional singers took it up. Among them, Nat King Cole, Mary Tyler Moore, the International Children’s Choir, The Young Americans, Bing Crosby, Harry Connick Jr., and Bob Hope to list a small few.

The song began to win awards and “Let There Be Peace on Earth” was awarded the George Washington Honor Medal by the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge for “Outstanding achievement in helping to bring about a better understanding of the American Way of Life.” It also received a Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. This simple thought, “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me” first born on a mountain top in the voices of youth, continues to travel heart to heart – gathering in people everywhere who wish to become a note in a song of understanding and peace – peace for all humankind.

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as creator
We are family
Let us walk with each other
In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
In peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
